Anti FGM group records progress in Osun, warns against female circumcision- by Olaniyi Abdulwaheed

The advocates of Anti-Female Genital Mutilation group in Osun has recorded progress in its efforts towards eradicating female genital mutilation that many people in towns and villages in the state had heeded to the sensitization being done so far. But they warned those who still engage in it to desist from the practice in order not to face the wrath of the law.

This was made known in Osogbo the capital of Osun during the orientation for FGM representatives known as  ‘Champions’ to gear up their efforts in the campaign against female circumcision. Mrs Aduke Obelawo lauded the FGM ‘Champions,’ for their resilience in the campaign against the practice, saying that any female who have been circumcised is vulnerable to many diseases related to female folk.

Speaking with the journalists, Obelawo said that the objectives of the initiative are: to further raise FGM ‘Champions’ awareness and understanding of the phenomenon; to equip the ‘Champions’ with relevant strategies to deliver and advocate for the abandonment of female genital mutilation and to highlight challenges and gaps in conducting household discusions.

‘Our objective is to end female genital mutilation in Osun that is why we embark on continuous sensitization and orientation. Let those who know inform those who are not because there is zero tolerance to female circumcision,’ she said.

Speaking on the short and long term consequences of female genital mutilation, Dr Lekan Awolola who is a gynecologist said that women who were circumcised could experience continuous bleeding during labour, anaemia which is low blood level, acute urinary retention, injury[P1]  to the adjacent structure of the genital, fracture and dislocation among others.

Awolola also stressed that female circumcision is violation of right to life, right to liberty, right to health care and protection. He further noted that people did not seek the consent of the female children before they were circumcised.

Stressing the progress in the sensitization exercise, Mrs Ogunlowo Lola together with other members of theme in charge of Ifelodun local government said that they had recorded success during the continuous sensitization, saying that many people had stopped female circumcision in the area.
