Omelette in the earth – By Olaniyi Abdulwaheed

The forest of bravery has lost its jewels
In the tussles with the rebels.
The rift to shave the bushy air of terror
Squashed by the ambush.
The sabre-toothed tiger lost its strong teeth.
The land left unclad
Now, fragile our strength

The moon has been buried in the earth!
The glittering sun has lost its sparkling eye!
The sky cries for its lost sights,
Our men, off on the earth!

The sun has licked the blood that shielded our strength
Ah! The earth has swallowed the apple of our eyes!
The façade of the force, cracked

Ah! Peppery the vegetable of roaring terror
The thorn of genocide pinched our heart
But silent visitor has stolen our pill

Ali, the gems, had shielded the shell
Before the beak of national foes
Hewed the egg of peace.

(For Lt. Col. M. Abu Ali and others who died while combating Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria)

  1. This is more than a dirge, more than a tribute. This is action in words. A poetic and active salute to peace.
