THE giANT OF AFRICA - By Ojo Ifeoluwa Dorcas


The GIANT of yesterday;
The crumbling ANT of today,
Left to lord Trump's crumbs.
Left alone am I to ponder
What will become of tomorrow Africa
When the giANT still borrows
From the very ones who tag her "lame and helpless".


The giANT is bleeding,
Her children reduced to weeping,
Her Youth protesting, Adult grumbling.
No pretending; Her future is dying.

Oh death! Take us not,
But our future we render for peanut,
Generations yet to come left with nought
But I sure will not keep shut;
Until we stop empty talks and take to worthy acts!
Our giANT will keep bleeding
And we, will keep weeping, protesting and grumbling.

English the language of the colonial masters in Nigeria. Colonial masters bequeathed English to Nigeria as part of the ways of making Nigerians adopt their culture. Since language is part of the culture and culture is part of the language, Nigerians overwhelmingly adopted British culture and viewed it as the best gaze in the mirror. The prestige attached to British culture cannot be confiscated in English, the British language. However, many scholars with different opinions have argued on the existence of the English Language, whether it is a curse or blessing for the country. I remembered this particular incident that shaped and reshaped my closeness with family members vividly. This incident also made me make a decision never to put any of my children under the tutelage of any family members. It happened in the year 2010,there was a girl called "Esse."
