A CRITICAL REVIEW OF A PLAY TITLED “ARMattan of VENOM” BY OLANIYI ABDULWAHEED

Playwright : Gege Baseran Title of the book : ARMattan of VENOM  (KOMMEDY of the Other ) Genre : Play Reviewed by : Olaniyi Abdulwaheed ………………………………………………………………………………………………….. It may not take an ordinary man to wipe the tears of a suffering land. The land that is full of chaos is not always friendly with orderliness. While some are working towards progress, many are blocking the estuaries to the sea of social development. In the land, people bargain their conscience with personal gain. People whose responsibility is to look after the social well being of the people, serve as the doctors to societal hills, are even the patients to be treated at the ward of the universe. Oftentimes, it is so painful to be in the harsh condition of social weather; when there should be breeze, it gives heat; when rain is required, it gives Harmattan, so everyone in the society shivers in the boulevard of penury and chaos. In this sense, Gege Baseran travels to the world of sage

Is the English Language a Curse or Blessing to Nigeria? by Olaniyi Abdulwaheed

Image
English the language of the colonial masters in Nigeria. Colonial masters bequeathed English to Nigeria as part of the ways of making Nigerians adopt their culture. Since language is part of the culture and culture is part of the language, Nigerians overwhelmingly adopted British culture and viewed it as the best gaze in the mirror. The prestige attached to British culture cannot be confiscated in English, the British language. However, many scholars with different opinions have argued on the existence of the English Language, whether it is a curse or blessing for the country. Some argued that, embracing English language is a curse to Nigeria, whereas some believe that it a force of blessing for the nation.  The growth of the English language in Nigeria can be traced to the heterogeneous nature of Nigerian society. Nigeria is a country with many languages with at least of about 400 languages. Most of these languages are not mutually intelligible, that is, speakers of one langua

BUHARI AND THE BURDEN OF HISTORY by Olaniyi Abdulwaheed

2015 marks a significant milestone in the political history of Nigeria. The development is a change in government from one civilian rule to another. It has not happened like this before since the birth of the nation. The remarkable event that changed the historical record is the defeat of the ruling party by the opposition one. Before achieving this, it was an arduous journey, involving parties and persons. The parties involved started cooking the soup early; one ended up with sweetness, the other with sour taste. Both prepared for the journey. But the one that augurs well puts the crown on Buhari’s head, the man of history. Buhari, the rare man in the chain of history, stands tall, dreams high, with long vision, relentless mission and with deep thought to witness sun-shine after rain. He was born on 17 December, 1942 in Daura, Kastina state in favour of his father, Adamu and his mother, Zulaihat. His father gave birth to make fruits, so he was the 23 rd child. Like his father—in

Muhammadu Buhari's Inaugural Speech

Image
Inaugural speech by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari following his swearing-in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 29th May, 2015 I am immensely grateful to God Who Has preserved us to witness this day and this occasion. Today marks a triumph for Nigeria and an occasion to celebrate her freedom and cherish her democracy. Nigerians have shown their commitment to democracy and are determined to entrench its culture. Our journey has not been easy but thanks to the determination of our people and strong support from friends abroad we have today a truly democratically elected government in place.

Rots of National Resources

Image
Nigeria is a country blessed with both human and natural resources. Natural resources crown to this country is quite proliferate-ranging from oil, groundnut, cocoa as well as palm oil to mention a few. These have added values to the country in one way or the other, making it to stand shoulder to shoulder with other countries in the world. So at dawn of the independence, Nigeria was regarded as the giant of Africa in terms of economic buoyant. In related development, human development thrived equally as the country was germinating after her independence-all these gave Nigeria a good foresight of how wealthy the nation would be before centenary celebration of the independence.

2015 Election: the Pinnacle of History, Harbinger of Doom

It is the time to rise. It is the time to fall. It is the time to be wise, the time to be foolish, the time to get the pinnacle of history and the time to sit at the pit of the story. Stories; story of life, story of death, story that makes a wife stumbles with the husband due to the spiel that hammer the belly, leaving mouth ajar like a rusty door. This is also the story that will iron the ears that listen to the voice of the air. This time is not strange. This time is queer. It is bizarre to the people who think the other way round while it is run-of-the-mill to those expecting it. The time for our country, the day(s) for our nation-the day we architect our shame or pride, the day of reckoning. The day that determines the fate of Caesar, who rules with power, the day to know the Judas that lures the nation to his pouch, the day to know the right and wrong messiah.

Development is not Achievable by Pledge and Quests of Mind by Olaniyi Abdulwaheed

The need for human and national development is not by making vows. It is just a means to it. Good ambition spates in the mind of everyone, to the developed, developing and underdeveloped nation intense goals is the common phenomenon, while individual in society nurtures personal development in mind every dusk and dawn, making promises and wishes in the mirage of self plenum. Thus everyone claims the nomenclature that has no chain of relation to his Adam. It is achievable , the phrase they pestle in their utterances while nation steps forward to be the leading horse in the race whereas her hind legs always cripple. How do we achieve development, through mind?
